Possible causes of failed recognition
In some cases, identification may be unsuccessful. The most common causes are:
- artwork not registered on the Veralinx platform;
- images recorded with insufficient quality or inadequate detail;
- graphic features of the artwork that are too uniform or not distinctive for the algorithm;
- suboptimal shooting conditions, such as low light, reflections, excessive tilt, partial framing, or a blurry image.
For best results, we recommend:
- photographing the artwork in good lighting;
- framing it as frontally as possible;
- including it entirely in the image;
- keeping the camera steady and in focus.
Usage
- Launch Opera-ID from the Home screen.
- Log in with your Veralinx credentials.
- Authorize the device’s geolocation, if required.
- Press the center button to activate the camera.
- If your device allows it, before shooting, choose the framing ratio best suited to the shape of the artwork, such as 1:1, 4:3, or 16:9. In general:
- 1:1 is suitable for square-shaped artworks;
- 4:3 is generally the most balanced format for many rectangular artworks;
- 16:9 can be useful for particularly elongated artworks, especially vertically or horizontally, when it allows for better filling of the frame.
- Frame the artwork from the front, in good lighting conditions, and try to include it completely.
- For better identification, the artwork should occupy most of the frame, leaving only a small margin visible around the edges.
- Avoid photographing the artwork from too far away, with a large background surrounding it, or from too close, cutting off edges, frames, or peripheral details.
- Hold your smartphone as parallel as possible to the work’s surface, avoiding tilted shots, oblique perspectives, or severe deformations. The image must be centered, stable, and sharp.
- Avoid reflections, harsh shadows, direct flash light, shiny surfaces, or foreign objects visible in the frame. If possible, use natural light or diffused, even lighting.
- If the artwork is vertical, hold your smartphone vertically; if the artwork is horizontal, rotate it horizontally. The goal is to adapt the frame to the actual shape of the artwork, so that it is recognizable in its entirety.
- Take the photo.
- Before sending the image, check that the artwork is complete, well-lit, not blurry, and not cropped.
- Press the button to send the image to the recognition system.
- Wait a few seconds for the result.
- If the artwork is successfully identified, you will have direct access to the Artwork Card and, if applicable, the blockchain registration.
System Function and Limitations
Opera-ID is a technological tool designed to support the identification and verification process of artworks.
It does not replace visual analysis, documentary evaluation, or expert experience, but offers an initial level of digital recognition based on a comparison between the acquired image and those stored in the system.
Opera-ID currently:
- is designed for the recognition of two-dimensional artworks;
- it does not support three-dimensional artworks such as sculptures or installations;
- it only identifies artworks already registered on the Veralinx platform.
The system analyzes and compares the image’s visual characteristics with those in the archive.
Therefore, it is unable to independently determine whether the identified artwork is, for example, an original, a reprint, or a reproduction of a different size.
This evaluation requires analysis of the data contained in the Artwork Card and review by the user or the expert performing the verification.
