Services Offered by Veralinx

What services does Veralinx offer?

Veralinx [VL] provides an advanced digital platform for the registration, protection, and verification of artworks. The service is designed to ensure authenticity, traceability, and security through innovative tools based on blockchain and NFC TAG technology.

Does Veralinx perform artwork authentication or expert appraisal?

No, [VL] does not perform authentication or expert appraisal of artworks. The platform provides advanced digital tools that enable artists, foundations, and art professionals to assign a certified digital identity to artworks, improving protection against counterfeiting and facilitating traceability.

[VL] integrates with and supports traditional authentication processes by offering:

  • Digital Artwork Card: a digitally signed document recorded on blockchain that certifies the connection between the artwork and its author.
  • NFC TAG: a device physically applied to the artwork to enable immediate authenticity verification via smartphone.
  • Opera-ID web app: an image-based recognition tool that makes it possible to identify the artwork and verify its details.

[VL] therefore provides advanced technological tools to support foundations, archives, and artists in the process of authentication and protection of artworks.

Is Veralinx an art marketplace?

No, [VL] is not an e-commerce platform and does not sell artworks. Its purpose is to provide technologies for digital certification and protection of artwork authenticity.

Does Veralinx allow the creation of NFTs?

No, [VL] is not a platform for creating NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). Unlike NFTs, which are associated with digital files, Veralinx connects a physical artwork to an Artwork Card and an NFC TAG, both recorded on blockchain, creating a stable and verifiable link between the artwork and the artist.

Digital Identity of the Artwork

What is meant by the digital identity of an artwork?

The digital identity of an artwork is a set of data securely and immutably recorded to certify its connection to the artist. This is achieved through the digital Artwork Card, the NFC TAG, and blockchain registration, ensuring authenticity and traceability.

What is a digital Artwork Card?

It is a digital document containing images and detailed information about the artwork. The card is digitally signed by the editor (artist or procurator) and recorded on blockchain, ensuring that it cannot be altered or falsified.

Example of an Artwork Card (featuring a fictional artist).

Why is the Artwork Card important?

In addition to certifying the connection between the artwork and the artist, the Artwork Card is an essential element for the protection of intellectual property. It provides structured digital documentation that can be used to strengthen the artist’s protection against plagiarism, misuse, or forgery attempts. A registered Artwork Card can also be used to generate a PDF Record Certificate, useful for sharing the main documentary and blockchain information with collectors, galleries, archives, foundations, and other stakeholders.

What is the Record Certificate?

The Record Certificate is a PDF document that summarizes the main registration data of the artwork in a form suitable for sharing.

It includes, on a single page:

  • the name of the Artwork Card;
  • the registration hash code;
  • the blockchain transaction reference;
  • a QR code to access the Artwork Card;
  • a QR code to access the related blockchain transaction.

The Record Certificate is designed as a practical document to be shared with stakeholders such as collectors, galleries, archives, foundations, art professionals, or other parties interested in the documentary verification of the artwork.

Example of a Record Certificate.

What is the purpose of the Record Certificate?

The Record Certificate makes it easier to consult and share the essential information connected with the registration of the artwork. Through the QR codes, it allows quick access both to the Artwork Card and to the blockchain reference, making documentary verification and presentation of the artwork to third parties more straightforward.

Who can generate the Record Certificate?

The Record Certificate can be generated from the editor’s account, that is, by the artist or the authorized procurator, starting from the registered Artwork Card.

What is the hash code of the digital Artwork Card?

The hash code is a unique digital fingerprint of the Artwork Card, recorded on blockchain. This code ensures that the card cannot be modified after registration without the change being detectable.

Security and Data Preservation

What happens if Veralinx were to shut down its server?

The information would not be lost.

  • Artwork Cards can be downloaded and stored locally by the editor.
  • Blockchain is a distributed network, and the recorded data will remain accessible over time.

Why is Algorand the blockchain used by Veralinx?

[VL] has chosen Algorand because it offers:

  • fast transactions;
  • low registration costs;
  • energy efficiency, with low environmental impact;
  • high security through decentralization.

How the Platform Works

What is the procedure for using Veralinx?

The operating procedure includes:

  1. registering an account on the platform;
  2. generating a private key and a public key;
  3. purchasing credits to register artworks;
  4. creating the Artwork Card through the Card Editor, using the private key to digitally sign the card;
  5. the option to order NFC TAGs, which can be physically applied to the artwork and to the COA (Certificate of Authenticity).

What are private and public keys?

Private and public keys are fundamental elements of asymmetric cryptography, used to ensure security in digital communications. In this system, each user has a pair of keys:

  • Private key: must be kept secret and is used to digitally sign data, certifying its authenticity and origin.
  • Public key: can be shared freely and is used to verify the validity of the digital signature associated with the corresponding private key.

This mechanism makes it possible to reliably link the Artwork Card to the person who digitally signed it.

What is an NFC TAG?

It is an authentication chip that, once applied to the artwork or to its related certificate, allows authenticity to be verified through Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

Example of a TAG applied to the back of the artwork and to the COA.

How is an NFC TAG applied?

The NFC TAGs supplied by Veralinx are adhesive labels, easy to apply to smooth, clean, and dry surfaces.

They can be applied without particular difficulty, for example, to:

  • prints;
  • paper certificates;
  • COAs (Certificates of Authenticity);
  • rigid and smooth surfaces.

Before application, it is important that the surface is clean, dry, and free from dust or residues.

Once applied, the TAG should be considered permanent: attempting to remove it may damage it, compromise its integrity, or cause it to break. For this reason, it should be positioned carefully before final application.

In the case of surfaces that are not perfectly smooth, such as the back of a canvas, adhesion may be less immediate. In such cases, it may be useful to apply a small amount of multi-purpose glue suitable for materials such as fabric, wood, cardboard, or plastic.

The TAG cannot be applied to metal surfaces; contact support to identify the most suitable solution.

How is an NFC TAG read?

It is sufficient to bring an NFC-enabled smartphone close to the TAG. The device will generate a unique link directing the user to the registered Artwork Card, showing the artwork details and its authenticity status.

What is ArTAG?

ArTAG is the NFC TAG developed by [VL], designed to provide a high level of security and to counter cloning attempts or improper use.

Verification and Opera-ID App

What is Opera-ID?

Opera-ID is a web app that allows users to identify an artwork already registered on [VL].

It works through a smartphone camera and analyzes the image of the artwork to provide a matching index, that is, a degree of correspondence with the registered original. It can also geolocate the point where the scan takes place.

Opera-ID is a first-level rapid identification tool: after recognition, it allows access to the Artwork Card and the artwork’s blockchain record, enabling a more in-depth review of the registered data.

Can Opera-ID identify any type of artwork?

At present, Opera-ID can identify only artworks already registered on the platform and belonging to painting, graphic, or photographic categories. It is not yet able to recognize three-dimensional works such as sculptures.

Does Opera-ID by itself certify the authenticity of the artwork?

No. Opera-ID provides a first-level automatic identification based on visual correspondence with the registered artwork. Full verification requires consultation of the Artwork Card and, when available, the NFC TAG, together with an evaluation of the technical and documentary data associated with the artwork.

Is Opera-ID open to everyone?

No. To use Opera-ID, the user must log in as a registered [VL] user.

User Registration and Account Management

Who can register on the platform?

The platform is open to:

  • artists;
  • procurators and legal representatives.

Who can create and register Artwork Cards?

Artwork Cards can be created and registered by artists or by their authorized representatives.

Can users delete their accounts from the platform?

Yes. However, Artwork Cards that have already been created and registered cannot be deleted from the server or from the blockchain, since their preservation is an integral part of the system’s long-term traceability and verification.
